Neo Steam Overview

Neo Steam is a unique free to play MMORPG with a steampunk theme. Much of the game plays like a traditional fantasy game but the appearance of steam tanks, subway trams, and hot air balloons adds to the atmosphere. New players must chose between two factions who vie for control of a powerful resource called neosteam. The Republic of Rogwel is an industrialist nation with powerful machinery while the Elerd Kingdom preserves its ties with nature and magic. Each nation claims a separate continent while a third landmass, Taxn is contested territory where large and small battles take place between players. The same seven races and four starting classes are available to both factions though they have different second classes, which become available at level 10.

Neo Steam Review

Neo Steam was first introduced to the West in early 2008 through the GamenGame open beta but the publisher that picked it up, Game Network, never got around to releasing it. Months went by with little news and fans of the steampunk MMORPG were left frustrated. When all hope seemed lost, Atlus announced that it had acquired the license. Most of you have probably heard the name Atlus before, they’re a major publisher of console RPGs. Hopefully their professional approach carries over to their new online portal where Neo Steam is now hosted for the North American market.

Steampunk Rocks

Steampunk is a small niche genre inspired by Victorian era machines that were powered by heated water vapor, better known as steam. Clunky land vehicles and airplanes that look as though they are about fall apart give the world of Chrysalis a unique style that can’t be found in any other MMORPG to date. The trouble is that the steampunk elements are not emphasis enough. Besides the mechanist class, all races and classes are generic fantasy stock. But before selecting a race or class, players have to chose between two warring factions, the Republic of Rogwel or the Elerd Kingdom. The difference between the two is mostly cosmetic, Rogwel is more industrial and beginners start in an open plain area. Elerd is more mystical, with an emphasis on magic and nature. Elerd starting locations are more generally more forested. While each nation has the same set of beginner classes, they provide slightly different bonuses, for example Elerd Mystics have more intelligence than their Rogwel rivals. Players looking to craft the best possible character should read more about these bonuses in the wiki but for most players, the only important factor is making sure all your friends are on the same side. While there are multiple servers, your faction pick applies to all servers and characters on the account.

Victorian View

Appearance customization in Neo Steam is rather limited, mainly due to the fact that most races are restricted to one gender. Elves can only be female while humans are all male. The one multi gender race are the Pom, a furry midget race that excel as machinists. There are a few face and hair styles to pick from but no more than you would find in an old 2D game, which is a shame. The game supports a large range of hardware which means the game can look either passable or impressive depending on the strength of your machine. While it is only now being officially released, Neo Steam is not a cutting edge game, it was first made available a year ago in the West and was available in Korea even before but the graphics are not as impressive as other recent Asian free to play games like Perfect World of Atlantica Online. Like Knight Online, Neo Steam pulls the classic trick of showing off the classes in high level gear during character creation so don’t be fooled by the machinist’s cool black/green suit.

A Romp Through the Fields

Neo Steam lacks a formal tutorial but this is for the best since the control scheme and interface should be familiar to anyone with prior gaming history. Movement can be done through the classic point & click method or with the keyboard but even players who prefer the keyboard will likely end up using the mouse since keyboard movement feels buggy and unresponsive. Turning side to side or going backwards causes more delay than it should. I found myself ’stuck’ on trees and other obstacles more than once and since the same bug was present during last year’s open beta, I don’t have much hope of it ever being corrected. The interface has a sci-fi feel to it with sleek silver bars but composed of your standard character, inventory, and skills menus. New characters don’t start with much in terms of gear but are placed next to an NPC that has a short series of quests that stock the player with necessary equipment. The first of these quests simply involves equipping a weapon while the next two are kill quests. Combat in Neo Steam is generally fast paced but relies heavily on spells & skills. The starting skills have fast cool downs and low mana/stamina costs but do nearly ten times as much as regular hits.

Skills that Kill

Spell casters have an early game advantage since they can one-shot monsters from a distance and move right to the next target. Gold is automatically looted which is helpful but items must be looted manually. All classes will be able to take on monsters several levels higher than themselves during the early stages which, along with the fast experience rate, keep progression brisk. The trouble with this is that things are just too easy for the first dozen levels. After completing the first kill quest, players receive a gift box that contains equipment and accessories and another gift box which can be opened when a certain level is reached. This is a common feature in MMORPGs and helps all players stay well equipped but discourages early level trade and teamwork. As players hunt and complete quests, they receive both experience and TP (training points.) Each level, a SP (stat point) is awarded. TP and SP are required to learn new skills and raise the rank of existing sills but they cannot be used just anywhere. Trainers are located near cities that place players into odd machines from which the skill menu can be accessed and skills can be trained.

Earning Your Station

At level 10 players can pick their primary class. Each character will have two options depending on their faction and base class. This leads to a total of 16 classes though the classes of the two nations are very similar. Each nation is on a separate continent but access to the third, contested continent is made available fairly early on. While on the continent of continent of Traxn, players can be attacked by all members of the opposite faction, regardless of level. This area has monsters of all levels and is actually the starting area of the Taxn Human race. The two factions at war model may be overused but it works well in Neo Steam. The only times I felt the need to work together with my fellow players was when a higher level Rogwel warrior killed me while I was hunting. PvP may not be everyone’s cup of tea but for those looking for a World of Warcraft style RvR experience, Neo Steam is well worth checking out.

Final Verdict: Good

Neo Steam is a solid MMORPG with a unique theme, large game world and enough PvP elements to keep players coming back for more. The occasional bug and balance issue do not prevent Neo Steam from being an enjoyable experience.

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine is a science fiction MMORPG loosely based on the Megami Tensei universe used in many Japanese console RPGs, the most recent of these being Persona 4. Because of the lengthy title, Imagine goes by several names but Aeria, the North American publisher, uses the title MegaTen. The most notable features in Megaten include the skill based progression system with dozens of expertise. Play as a Demon Buster who’s role it is to subdue demons and put them under your control. Major game events are broken down into Acts which usually have difficult bosses at the end requiring small groups to defeat. At this time, MegaTen contains no PvP content.

What? A Story?

If you’re a frequent MMORPG player, you’ve likely noticed that the story behind most games go something like this: ‘Ready, Set, Grind!’ MegaTen breaks with this mold a bit and throws in an introductory cutscene that tries to explain some of the game’s backstory. Another of these cutscenes awaits players who make it through the tutorial, but more on that later. From what I understood of this story, there was a huge apocalyptic war between Demons and Humans many years ago followed by a period of chaos which was washed away in a great flood. Now, in the 2X century, humanity has begun to reorganize in large underground shelters called ‘Homes’ but Demons have once again appeared on the surface to cause mischief.

And that brings us to you, a ‘Demon Buster’ in training. Your NPC instructor receives a call about a disturbance at a nearby Home and being the closest to the scene, volunteers to investigate the scene. This first mission acts as the game’s tutorial and introduces the game basics; movement, combat, skills and so forth. Following this tutorial, players are asked to take an additional optional tutorial in the ‘virtual room.’ This second tutorial goes into far more detail and explains more advanced skills such counter attacks and magic use. The combat in MegaTen is very similar to the system used in Mabinogi. Besides a normal attack, players have several special moves that can be activated such as block, counter, or rush. To defeat powerful enemies, proper use of these skills is required. For example, if an opponent blocks, a rush will break through it while a normal attack will only leave you vulnerable to a counter attack.

Limitless Possibilities

Character development in MegaTen is very in-depth and gives players plenty to think about. Besides leveling up and distributing stat points between the 6 stats, (Strength, Magic, Vitality, Intelligence, Speed, and Luck) players must chose which expertise they wish to develop. Each of these expertise contains its own skill line and is increased in rank by frequent use. All this is explained effectively in the second tutorial but as an example; casting an offensive spell increases the ‘destruction magic’ expertise which unlocks more potent spells. Players can ‘lock’ expertise they do not wish to grow since there is a skill cap. The skill cap also means your character will likely fall under one of three general templates; a melee fighter, a gunner, or a mage. Of course you are free to pursue all three skill types but it is far more efficient to specialize in one than attempt to be a jack of all trades.

Demon, I Choose You!

Demons play a major role in Megaten and not only as monsters to grind off. Several expertise are dedicated to charming, negotiating with or taunting monsters into submission. Both your character’s level and rank with these skills effects your chances at success but once subdued, these demons can be summoned to assist you in combat. During the early levels, players are limited to lame pets like pixies and injured dogs but will eventually have a large selection of pets, each with different skills and attributes. MegaTen also includes an interesting alignment system which puts players into one of three categories; Law, Neutral, or Chaos based on their actions. The only real disappointment I had with Megaten was the complete lack of PvP. Difficult boss fights requiring small groups seems to be the only end game content, let’s hope its enough! If for some reason you can’t get into Megaten, but like the sci-fi theme, you could check out other titles like RF Online and Anarchy Online or some sci fi themed MMOs like S4 League and Ace Online.

Final Verdict: Good

MegaTen manages to offer just enough unique features to distinguish itself but still maintain a traditional MMORPG feel. The fast paced combat, pet and skill system along with the post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi setting make Imagine stand out from the crowd.

Manga Fighter is a third person shooter with 3D animated graphics. Often referred to as ‘Counter-Strike for kids’, Manga Fighter has 6 playable classes, 4 game modes, and 8 maps to battle it out on. Collect achievement medals/titles while you gain ranks, earn money and purchase new accessories and weapons.

Manga Fighter Overview

Manga Fighter is an interesting game that takes the all too common shooter genre but does something different with it. This is not your typical gritty shooter set in the modern era, Manga Fighter has bright cartoony graphics and goofy characters like a giant teddy bear and a man with a television for a head. The (few) maps are wonderful designed and the game has a unique card based equipment and skill system. Additionally, Manga Fighter takes the often neglected third-person approach to the shooter genre along with games like GunZ and Exteel. There are currently 6 playable characters each with a different distribution of 3 stats, players are free to switch between them at anytime in the game’s lobby. The characters are:

Ken - Ken is a young boy with 100 health, 4 strength, and 5 speed.

Hana - Hana is a young girl with 100 health, 3 strength, and 5 speed.

Kuma - Kuma is a giant teddy bear with 200 health, 8 strength, and 3 speed. He is much easier to hit than other characters due to his size.

MiuMiu - An agile cat with 90 health, 2 strength, and 7 speed. MiuMiu is the hardest character to hit.

Sai - A man with a circular TV for a head, Sai has 130 health, 4 strength, and 4 speed.

Dr. Uru - Like Sai, Dr. Uru has a TV for a head but his is more rectangle shaped. He has 150 health, 5 strength, and 4 speed.

Martial Heroes Overview

Martial Heroes is a simple MMORPG with high experience rates and varied environments. Players are free to attack one another but must suffer the consequences of being labeled a PK (player killer.) The game is very beginner friendly and gives new players plenty of items and supplies to help them during the early phases. Though you select your class during character creation, it is not until level 12 that players chose which weapon to specialize in. Each of the four classes has three weapon specialization options. The choice is not trivial; each weapon brings with it its own set of skills which makes for a total of 12 character types. The four classes are:

Warrior - Warriors are the primary tanks and direct physical damage dealers. They have high defense and health to absorb blows from enemies. Warriors may wield either a scimitar, axe, or lance.
Assassin - Assassins rely on speed and cunning over brute force. They deal heavy damage but are physically weaker than Monks & Warriors. They can master either melee or ranged combat with their weapon choices: twin daggers, Bow, or Spike Gauntlets (Katars.)
Monk - The supportive class of Martial Heroes. Monks can fight alone but shine in groups where they heal and buff their allies. Weapon choices include: Pole, Mace or Shields (Loops.)
Mage - Offensive spell casters who possess the most powerful damage output. They are physically weaker than other classes and rely on indirect combat or allies to distract their targets. Mages use fans, gloves, or swords.

Players gain +3 stat points per level and +5 on levels that are multiples of 12 (12,24,36,etc)

Str - Relates to physical damage, it is the most important stat for Warriors.
vit - Boosts defense and maximum health. An important stat for Monks.
Dex - Increases accuracy (attack rating) and movement speed. Vital for Assassins.
Agi - Controls dodge rate and attack speed. Secondary attribute for Assassins.
Int - Main attribute for Mages and Monks. Increases max mana & skill damage.

All classes need a combination of all 5 stats to equip gear & be well balanced.

MLB Dugout Heroes is the first full fledged Baseball MMO and its a home run! The graphics might be cartoony but this is no knock off, the entire MLB rooster is represented accurately including all teams from the American and National Leagues. The gameplay mechanics are simple enough for the casual player to learn in about 10 minutes through the tutorial but team management is detailed enough to keep the hardcore fans satisfied. Players only really control the pitcher and batter with limited control of the other players on the field but there’s enough variety to keep things from getting too dull. With the experience and nuts (currency) earned through matches, players can grow their players’ stats or purchase new players, equipment, or skills. While the multiplayer aspects are the most interesting, players can play against the computer in 4 difficulty settings.

MLB Dugout Heroes Review

After a long production cycle, MLB Dugout Heroes was finally made available to the public in late March of 2009. While not all features were readily available during the open beta, MLB Dugout Heroes still managed to impress. The game’s publisher (Games Campus) worked closely with the MLB and was able to acquire the appropriate license to use authentic team and player stats. The cartoony graphics help mask the mediocre graphics of the game but anyone interested in baseball or sports in general should give this game a chance.

Pick a Team

Since baseball is a team sport rather than an individual one, there is no character creation per se, instead players chose a team name than select one of the major league teams that play on either the American or National Leagues. All the official teams are present with all the real players and stats so be sure to pick your favorite team. I’m not a sports guy myself so I just went with the Pirates because their name rocked. The teams are broken down into several categories by division so if you don’t see the team you like, be sure to look through the other divisions. And that’s really all there is to character creation, after selecting a team you’ll have a chance to view the players that make up that team so you can review their stats and either change your selection or confirm.

Batting Practice

After selecting a team, players will be taken to the batting tutorial where a couch instructs players on how to hit the ball. The controls are very straight forward when batting, move the mouse around and click when you want to swing. The pitcher will try to confuse you with fast, slow, and curve balls but it shouldn’t take long to get a feel for the timing. The next step of the tutorial is pitching practice which I found a little bit more complicated. Pitchers decide where to aim the ball, either within the batter’s reach or out of it in an attempt to get them to swing at what would normally be a ‘ball.’ There are several pitching styles (curve, fast, smart, slow) and after choosing a style and location, pitchers must hold down the mouse while a small slider bar appears on the screen. Getting a handle for pitching took me a few minutes (as you can see from the tutorial video below) but once it ticks in your head, you’ll be good to go.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game…

After this short tutorial session, players are pitted against a computer controlled team to get their first glimpse at gameplay in MLB Dugout Heroes. Before the game starts, you have the opportunity to decide which players will be on the field and can shuffle around their positions. My lack of knowledge beyond the basics when it comes to baseball kept me from tinkering with the starting lineup but if you know what you’re doing, there’s plenty to pour over in the pre-game. The game follows standard Baseball rules, one team bats while the other plays the field. Only the batting team can score points and they keep playing until they accumulate three ‘outs.’ I’m not going into all the rules of baseball, I hope everyone has picked them up either from television or during gym class during their schooling. Luckily, as long as you know the basics, you’re good to go with MLB Dugout Heroes. The only positions you really have to play are pitcher & batter. All of your team members run on their own whether on the field or after hitting the ball. The only control you have over your field players is what base to pass to after picking up the ball. This is done by either clicking the base icon with the mouse or hitting ‘D’ for 1st base, ‘W’ for second, ‘A’ for 3rd or ‘S’ for home.

Baseball is Not for the Impatient

Baseball may be a popular pass time in the United States & parts of the Asia but it is certainly not for the impatient. In real life, there are 9 innings (every time the teams switch sides, it’s a new inning) but thankfully this can be set as low as 3 in-game. The first practice match against the computer isn’t set at 3 but I couldn’t tell you what it is set at since I quit out of it before the end. Obviously playing against the computer is not as much fun as playing against a live opponent, even though there are four difficulty settings (intro, rookie, AMA, and Pro.) But this first match does give new players the opportunity to test what they’ve learned and see the game’s graphics for the first time. MLB Dugout Heroes has cartoony graphics that still manage to make the players and stadium decent. Nothing about the graphics will blow you away, in fact the limited graphic options may be an annoyance. The maximum resolution is 1024×768 and graphic details can’t be improved much.

A Game for the Masses

The flip side of the rather bland graphics is that the game requires low system requirements and can be played on a broad range of computers. The simple appearance and basic gameplay mechanics make MLB Dugout Heroes one of the most accessible MMOs I’ve played. Eve non-gamers shouldn’t have trouble figuring this one out after a few minutes. All players start with a decent chunk of the in-game currency called ‘nuts’ and more are earned for completing the tutorial, playing matches, and completing certain objectives. Each individual member of your baseball team gains experience and higher ranks in various skills; slowly putting together your dream team of players will surely keep baseball fans hooked on this one for some time to come. As of early April during the open beta, many features were not yet available such as ranked league play but these should be added within a month or two. I’ll use my final words to warn players of the odd voice clips in the game, the cheering you hear in the back ground during matches is actually a recording of real life cheering for the Korean National Team. The referee also calls out in a thick Korean accent which might sound to Westerners.

Final Verdict: Good

MLB Dugout Heroes is simple to pick up & play baseball MMO that will appeal to all fans of the sport but is unlikely to impress outsiders. What it lacks in graphic and gameplay detail it makes up with in in-depth team management & an authentic MLB roster.

Monato Esprit Overview

Monato Esprit is the first game to make use of the MetaTIX virtual currency which completely replaces the traditional in-game currency found in most MMORPGs. With no NPC shopkeepers or vendors available, players must barter between themselves and use MetaTIX to participate in auctions, receive certain quests, and enter certain dungeons. Loot found on monsters is used to craft gear and consumables like potions which makes it possible to play without having to pay for the virtual currency. Besides the unique economic model, Monato Esprit is a very generic fantasy MMORPG. Players start as a novice and chose between 6 classes upon reaching level 5. The classes are:

Hwarang - Offensive warriors who use 2 handed swords to inflict heavy damage/

Templar - Defensive warriors who use shields and heavy armor to protect themselves and absorb enemy blows.

Mage - Offensive spellcasters who command the four elements and cast devastating spells. Mages wear cloth armor and wield staffs.

Cleric - Supportive spell casters whose holy spells heal and buff allies. Clerics wear cloth armor and use wands.

Harlequin - The rogues of Monato Esprit. Harlequins rely on stealth, cunning, and a degree of showmanship to gain the advantage in a battle.

Sheriff - Ranged fighters who use firearms to deal damage from a safe distance. They are weaker than the melee classes in close combat.

Monato Esprit is the first game to be published by the company Reality Gap which has developed the new virtual currency platform, MetaTIX. What sets Monato Esprit apart from other free MMORPGs is the way the it handles its game economy. There are no NPC vendors or shopkeepers, instead there is a 100% player-driven economy where gamers must barter and trade using MetaTIX purchased from the official website. How does this interesting take mesh with an otherwise cookie-cutter fantasy MMORPG? Read on to find out!

MetaWhat?

While the client is available for download on the official site, players must register an account on a separate site, me.metatix.com. Monato Esprit is only the first of many MMORPGs that Reality Gap hopes to release using the MetaTix system and so your metatix account will serve as a universal account for all future releases. Character creation is a simple affair, there is only a single default race, the Archons which are winged humanoids. Players can select between 8 hair styles, 9 hair colors, 4 eye styles and 4 eye colors along with their character’s gender. For a 3D game coming out in 2009 this is not exactly detailed appearance customization and no matter how you arrange the few options, characters end up looking very similar to one another. To compensate for this, players are able to chose their character’s horoscope (12 choices) and preferring season (4 choices.) Each choice provides a different bonus to the player, for example the ‘Virgo’ horoscope grants players +10% accuracy.

A Long Lesson

After character creation, players are given the option to either run through the tutorial or skip it and head right to the city of Isildra. New players are strong urged to take the tutorial route for a number of reasons. The first is to get a feel for the game but the second and more important reason is that by the time players are through with the tutorial, they’ll be at level 5 at which point they will be able to chose their first class. The tutorial suffers from being far too long winded. Each NPC you encounter teaches a different lesson, the first explains movement, the second combat, the third alchemy (crafting), and the forth dungeons. It is important to practice all four but does that really require a dozen dialogue boxes? I found myself hitting ‘next’ as rapidly as possible and simply reading the quest overview in my log afterwards to see what I was asked to do. The tutorial moves along rapidly with each NPC eventually asking you to move further down the road to the next one up until you get to the first dungeon, here things slow down a bit.

Dull Dungeons

Dungeons in Monato Esprit are instanced and while some can be entered freely, others require MetaTix to gain admission. While this puts many of the top tier dungeons out of reach for free players, you’ll be glad to know that you won’t be missing much. Dungeon designs in Monato Esprit are similar to those in Corum Online or Mabinogi, they are repetitive, dull, and mostly empty. Wandering through countless identical rooms with poor mini-map support can get a bit frustrating, especially when looking for a particular kind of monster. Eventually after completing the trial dungeon quests and a series of talk quests, players will be ready to head to the mainland. Isildra is the city of beginners and serve as a base of operations for many levels to come. It is here that players will find the class change NPC by paying attention to the mini-map. Luckily all NPCs who have quests available are clearly marked on the mini-map by large ‘!’ icons. There are 6 classes currently available in Monato Esprit; the offensive Hwarang, defensive Templar, powerful Mage, supportive Cleric, roguish Harlequin, and gunslinger Sheriff. A series of kill quests are required to complete the class change process at which point the player’s level is reset to 1 and their appearance changes along with their class.

Cookie Cutter Combat

The game controls much like other Korean fantasy MMORPGs. Movement is done exclusively with the mouse while keyboard shortcuts are available to open menus and perform skills assigned to the toolbar. Movement and combat feel a bit slow paced and the graphics leave a lot to be desired. There are very few graphic settings and the maximum resolution is 1280×1024. The visuals themselves aren’t high quality but still look nice with a ‘cutesy’ appeal. The game’s visuals reminded me of Final Fantasy 9 while others have said it looks like ‘a chibi version of Ragnarok Online 2.’ But is isn’t graphics that make the game, it is gameplay and community. Monato Esprit has been available for several months now in various stages of beta but it is only in July of 2009 that it has be officially released yet it still supports a very low population. Players are unlikely to bump into others which gives the game a very bleak atmosphere despite the warm art style. The gameplay just feels too generic, players gain skill points as they level up to distribute among several skills including buffs, attacks, and passive bonuses. The only element that stands out in Monato Esprit is the economy.

Econ101

It won’t take long for players to notice that the monsters they kill don’t drop any sort of currency. They do drop other items such as vials, pelts, and other resources which can be used to craft new equipment. Almost everything players need is craftable though players will first need to read the recipe for the item in question. Recipes are one time use only but will allow the character who uses it to craft that particular item from then on. The tutorial shows players how to craft health potions through the alchemy screen, each item requires a number of reagents found by killing certain monsters. It is these reagents and finished products that players trade with one another through a barter system or by exchanging MetaTix, the premium currency which can only be obtained by spending real dollars. Players can enjoy Monato Esprit without ever spending a dime on MetaTix since the expansive crafting system allows almost every item to be crafted but the lack of a standard game currency does get annoying, especially when tolls are required to access certain parts of the game. MetaTix cost 100 for every $1 and can be purchased in customized batches. It won’t take long for the average gamer to decide for themselves whether Monato Esprit is a game worth investing their time and money in but in my humble opinion, Reality Gap could of found a better game to test out its new virtual currency system with.

Final Verdict: Fair

Monato Esprit is a typical fantasy MMORPG whose unique take on a play driven economy doesn’t save the otherwise bland gameplay. With limited graphic and gameplay options, Monato Esprit feels like a much older game that has so far failed to attract a large audience.

Mu Online Overview

Mu Online is another old pay to play game gone free to play. It is one of the oldest MMORPGs out there as it was released in 2003, but it still has a surprisingly large and loyal playerbase. The game’s graphics and interface both look a lot older classics like Diablo and Baldur’s Gate. The game has a total of five classes, but two of them have to unlocked, so the the game’s three starting classes are:

Dark Wizard- Dark Wizards are the primary offensive spell casting class in Mu Online. They are capable of dealing massive amounts of damage to both single and area of effect targets. The drawback to their powerful offensive skills are that they tend to have low hit points and weak defensive capabilities.
Dark Knight - Dark Knights are the primary ‘warrior’ archetype in Mu Online. They have plenty of hit points and high defensive capabilities, but their offensive capabilities are fairly weak during the early levels of the game.
Elf – Elves in Mu Online are a hybrid of the cleric and archer archetypes. They can cast supportive magic while being able to deal a fair amount of damage with their bows from a distance.

Mu Online is one of those games that most people have never heard of, but are still incredibly popular. Seems impossible right? Well, the game has an enormous playerbase but I have never really seen the game advertised anywhere. Perhaps the game is more heavily advertised in other parts of the world, as a lot of the players I bumped into while exploring Mu Online were not English speakers. Mu Online is used to be a pay to play game back when it was released in 2003 but is now free to play. Yeah, that’s right, the game was originally released in 2003, so don’t expect too much in terms of graphics, as they’re quite an eye strain.

First Impressions
Upon installing and logging into Mu Online the first thing that popped into my head was, ‘wow, this looks a lot like Blizzard’s Diablo 1’. The game has virtually the same interface and look as the old Blizzard title, but with a few key differences. The graphics are incredibly jagged and an overall eye strain. Don’t get me wrong, the spell and skill animations are actually quite nice, but the overall environments and character models aren’t pleasant to look at. Mu Online’s character creation wasn’t all that either, as the game has absolutely no character customization. Heck, the game doesn’t even allow you to pick your gender! I was never expecting a Perfect World like character creation system but it would have been nice to have at least some options.

Another small issue that I picked up within the first few minutes of playing Mu Online was that the game has three starting classes; Dark Knight, Dark Wizard and Elf. Having only three classes in and of itself is pretty lame and since when was ‘Elf’ considered a class anyway? I’m pretty sure something got lost in translation and was never fixed, as Elves are a race not a class. Another serious complaint I have with Mu Online is that the game has no map, which is simply ridiculous. It is far too easy to get lost in the game’s large world, and without a map or radar or some sort, the only way to find your way back to town is by wandering around, which is absurd. Nearly all of my first impressions on Mu Online were negative, but the game does get better after the first few levels.

The Good Stuff
If you can look past a lot of Mu Online’s faults, the game does have a lot of interesting components. The gameplay is fast paced, the experience rate is just right and the game has a massive community. The game’s item system is also quite impressive, as it closely resembles the ‘randomized item stat system’ of Diablo 1 and 2 where magic items have randomized stats. Instead of items being labeled as ‘magic’ and ‘unique’ like they are in Diablo 1 & 2, magic items in Mu Online are labeled as ‘Excellent’ and ‘Ancient’, with ‘Ancient’ items being the rarest and most powerful type in the game. Mu Online also has regularly scheduled events to keep players occupied entertained, which is something I believe all MMORPGs should have, but unfortunately do not. The folks over at Gamer’s First tend to do a great job with keeping their games updated and fun, as one of their other popular titles, Sword of the New World also has regularly scheduled events. Another good aspect of Mu Online is that each class have three different job promotions, so the game does have a fairly strong sense of advancement.

PvP Options
Mu Online has a fairly strong emphasis on PvP, as players can kill each other anywhere outside of the game’s towns, meaning players can fight and kill other players without their consent. The game does discourage mindless killing by penalizing those that kill ‘too many’ people by labeling them as outlaws in the game. Regular players are free to kill ‘outlaws’ in the game without penalty and can actually claim a piece of equipment from the slain outlaw as well. Mu Online also has an assortment of other PvP modes that are common staples to other MMOs like consensual dueling, guild wars and occasional PvP events.

Final Verdict – Good
Mu Online has some serious flaws, but if you can look past the game’s poor graphics and limited customization, the game has some interesting content that you won’t find in other games. The game is certainly nowhere near as revolutionary as Diablo 2, but if you were a fan of the Diablo series, Mu Online is definitely worth checking out.

Myth War 2 Online Overview

Myth War 2 Online is the updated version of Myth War Online. The two games are essentially the same except for a graphic update and a remake of the beginning area. I’ve heard some complaints that Myth War 2 is even more cash shop dependent than the original, with things like global chat now require cash shop purchases. Myth War 2 has four races that also act as classes. The only character customization available is gender selection, luckily each gender of a race has  a different special skill. The four races are:

Mage - Mages have low HP but possess powerful spells that deal heavy damage. The most important stat for a mage is Intelligence. Male Mages have the ‘fire’ spell while female Mages use ‘ice.’

Human - Humans have the highest HP total and have PvP focused skills. Male Humans can use ‘frailty’ which lowers their targets mana. Female Humans posses the ‘poison’ skill that lowers target’s max hp.

Borg - Borg have the highest strength but the lowest speed. Male Borg can use ‘drain’ which lowers opponent’s mana and HP. Female Borg posses ‘resistance upgrade’ which buffs their physical and magic resistance.

Centaur - Centaurs are the healers of Myth War 2 and have the highest agility. The male Centaur’s special skill is ‘multishot’ while the female’s is ’shadow.’

Myth War 2 is technically a new game but is so similar to the original that I look at more as an expansion or a content upgrade. The same four races are available, the combat , skills, stats, and pet systems are identical. The graphics have been upgraded but still won’t win the game any awards. The one significant improvement, at least in my book, has been the simplifying of the tutorial process. In the original game, getting started meant talking to many more NPCs and even taking a multiple choice quiz! One area that has not been improved is the game’s horrible translations so players should be ready to decipher Engrish.

Race or Class?

Myth War 2 Online is published by IGG, the company behind other 2D MMORPGs including Angels Online, Tales of Pirates, Wonderland and the upcoming GodsWar Online. This sort of games usually have poor character customization but Myth War 2 disappoints with absolutely no appearance customization whatsoever. Each of the four races have a gender option for a total of 8 different avatars. I’m not sure if something was lost in translation but it seems the developers were confused when coming up with their races; Human, Mage, Borg, and Centaur. The only original race out of those four is the Borg. Centaurs look like fair haired humans (elves?) but are certainly not half horse. I’m not quite sure how Mage even made it as a race but let’s not dwell too much on cosmetics. The only thing that saves character creation from being a complete let down is that gender actually makes a difference in game. Each gender has a special skill not available to the opposite. For example, a male Mage has the fire spell while female Mages have ice. I know it’s not much but it makes a difference in a game that’s this thin on content.

From the Top

Those of you familiar with the original Myth War Online will notice a large change right from the start. The whole flying castle of a tutorial area has been removed in favor of a simpler village near the shore. Message prompts inform the player which NPCs to talk to, all of which are located nearby. Coordinate locations are given to make finding things even easier and the game map (opened by hitting tab) is neat and organized. After completing the first few talk quests, you’ll receive skill points which you can use to increase your starting skills. Each skill takes an increasing number of points to raise based on its level. My suggestion for beginners is to use all available points to pump a single offensive skill. There are only 4 stats in Myth War 2; Stamina, Intelligence, Strength and Agility. Each level, players receive 4 points to distribute among these stats. What each stat does should be obvious to most RPG veterans; Stamina increases max hp, intelligence increases magic damage and max mana, strength increases physical damage and agility increases speed. Following the tutorial quests further will introduce players to one of Myth War’s most important features – pets. There are numerous pets available and they level up, gain stats and skills just like your main character. Movement is standard point and click and it isn’t until you get into battles that things get exciting.

Wait Your Turn!

Combat in Myth War 2 Online is turn based but the game won’t wait for you to make your move! A small yellow bar which fills at a rate determined by your agility indicates your character is ready to make a move. Players can perform melee attacks, use skills, items, block or chose to flee the battle on their turn. In addition to your character, you pet also participates in battles and makes a great partner. Which pets you use and how you grow them will depend on your class and play style. A mage will want a pet with high defense and pumped up stamina while a Human or Borg may need a more damage oriented pet. The monsters you’ll be fighting during the early levels won’t pose much of a challenge and even dieing isn’t punished heavily. Upon death, players are taken to the nearest town with full health. Myth War 2 starts things out with a bang and gives players a triple experience buff which lasts for about an hour. If you put this time to good use, you should have no trouble flying through the initial levels.

It’s a Small World After All

Myth War’s main attractions has always been its unique combat and pet system. When I first played Myth War several years ago it was the only free to play game of its kind available (at least in the USA.) Fast forward to 2009 and the turn based MMORPG market isn’t so small anymore. Huge 3D games like Atlantica Online look and play like main stream RPGS. At least half a dozen other 2D pet based MMORPGs have been released recently including Stonage 2, Elf Online and Fairyland Online to name a few. With a total of 3 towns, 4 bosses and a list of quests that looks short by comparison, Myth War 2 Online just doesn’t have the content to compete with its rivals.

Final Verdict: Fair

Myth War has an interesting combat system  but even with the recent upgrade to Myth War 2, the game looks and feels too old to compete in today’s market. With only 4 races, Myth War is too short on content and character customization to earn a higher rating.

Last Chaos Overview

While the class options available in Last Chaos aren’t anything new, the advanced graphics engine brings them to life better then ever before. Players can choose between Titan, Knight, Sorcerer, Mage, Rogue and Healer before beginning to play the game, but are sadly locked to a single gender. The model animations look equally fantastic, but are let down by the hugely limited character customization options, giving players little sense of individuality.

The cloning issue of the MMORPG genre is one known far and wide across the globe. Chances are that if you had played an MMORPG a few years ago, then there’s a bigger and better version of the same game available right now, and it’s probably free to play too. Last Chaos is a prime example of that cycle, acting as yet another generic recreation of another MMORPG. In this case, the original was Lineage 2.

LOOKIN’ FINE
The only bright side to this whole cloning issue lies in the advancement of certain features. While the look and feel of the world remains the same, new features are added, graphics are improved, and the formula is enhanced. Last Chaos has definitely done well in this regard, and in several different ways too. The Graphics are easily the most noticeable, so I’m going to start there. Using an advanced graphics engine Last Chaos is capable of producing magnificent lighting visual effects and as such the textures, buildings and models all superb. More importantly though is the model and character animation, whereby the characters move both fluently and realistically at even the worst of times.

One such example that instantly comes to mind are the animations of the Rogue class, where even a simple attack will see her jumping in the air and stabbing the enemy just as you would expect a highly trained assassin to do. The E.R.A.S system in Last Chaos, allowing players to attack not only a single target but also other targets caught in the swing/blast radius, adds much to this effect, giving the combat in Last Chaos a very realistic feel throughout.

OFF TO A GOOD START
The beginning of Last Chaos, more appropriately the tutorial, is another highlight of the game in my eyes as players are neither placed in the middle of a giant town wondering where to go nor forced to complete a mundane tutorial. Instead they are required to complete a small mission that takes place in a dungeon below the city. To complete the mission, players must eliminate all the monsters and escape with their lives intact. It’s nothing major, but it’s seldom seen in the genre, and although it acts as a tutorial it is neither boring nor mundane for any part.

Unfortunately, that is just about where the innovation of Last Chaos ends, and the repetitive grind based gameplay begins. While some of the included features such as the pet system allowing players to ‘grow’ either a Horse or a Dragon are nice, it adds little to the overall experience, and is another shameless rip-off of a feature found in Lineage 2. The quest system has been tweaked to allow players to complete quests without first having to accept them, but this draws largely from the immersion in my opinion, and again, adds little to the experience.

OXYMORONS CAN BE FUN
Some other features present in Last Chaos however are quite remarkable, once such feature being the Solo Instanced Dungeons. Like many other MMORPGs there are instanced dungeon encounters designed to allow players to venture and explore new terrain, kill new and exciting bosses, and earn new equipment in the process. However, these usually require groups of up to six players to complete, and can be hard to finish. In Last Chaos many of these dungeons have been designed for a single player to complete alone, and while the concept of a single player MMO experience is something of an oxymoron, in application it works quite well.

The other impressive addition I found in Last Chaos was its unique skill advancement system that will see players not only leveling their characters, but also their weapons and individual skills too. While this system does promote some fairly heavy grinding, it also allows players to be unique from one another, something that helps to counteract the limited customization options.

SWING AN’ A MISS
My two biggest hates in Last Chaos, and in any MMORPG, are the archaic ‘click-to-move’ system, and the vastly limited character customization. The click-to-move system is unforgivable, as I personally find it to create a truly lackluster experience. No jumping, no feel of control over your character – it may as well be a browser game as far as I’m concerned. Surely there are people out there that prefer click-to-move over the vastly popular ‘WASD’ system – and that’s fine. But at least allow us to choose the method we prefer. Surely this can’t be too difficult to implement on the grand scale of things.

The limited character customization is again an inexcusable one, as in Last Chaos there is barely any choice at all. When you create your character you are able to choose your class from a very small number of standard archetypes (Titan, Knight, Sorcerer, Mage, Rogue and Healer), gender is locked (Rogues can only be female, for example), there is only one available race (Human), and there is also little in the way of hair and face options too. I don’t want to look like everyone else, for the love of god, stop making me!

PvP in Last Chaos is unfortunately quite limited, and while players are able to attack other players as they choose, there are penalties involved for those that do to prevent griefing. Larger scale battles like castle sieges would have added much to Last Chaos, but happily the unique skill advancement system helps to make up for this.

Final Verdict: Good
While Last Chaos does add much to the standard MMORPG formula, it does little to entertain players, and offers no long term benefits or rewards. The graphical improvements are amazing, as are the animations, but are ultimately let down by a stock standard grind-based experience.

Magic World Online is an incredibly unique fantasy MMORPG with a boatload of features. Each of the game’s four starting classes have 12 different job advancements, which adds up to a whopping 48 playable classes. Players can own their own homes, hunt in instances and so much more. Magic World Online markets itself as a ‘new concept MMORPG’ and it truly is, the game completely eliminates ‘gold sellers’, ‘botting’, and even ‘grinding’. That’s right, you’ll never need to grind in Magic World Online to gain levels, and if you’re asking yourself, ‘how the heck is a this an MMOPRG if it does not have any grinding?’, you’ll need to download the game or read the full review to find out!

Warrior - Main tanking and offensive melee class.
Archer - Strong offensive capabilities with ranged attacks.
Mage - The primary offensive caster, can deal massive damage, but has low hit points and armor.

Magic World Online, or MWO for short, is an extremely content rich new MMORPG by ‘EnjoyMMO’. The game’s graphics are similar to TQ Digital’s Eudemons, but the gameplay is completely different. The game markets itself as a ‘new concept mmorpg’ and it isn’t lying, the game is one of the most unique MMORPGs I’ve had the opportunity of playing. Why is it unique you ask? Read on!

Starting out
I Was a bit excited before I even launched Magic World Online’s game client, because I just finished downloading the game and couldn’t help but notice the company behind the game literally slapped the catch phrase ‘new concept MMORPG’ everywhere they possibly could. After logging in I wasn’t initially impressed by the game’s character class selection screen, as the game only has four starting class and absolutely no customization, but at least the game gives me the option to select my gender, some games don’t even let you do that. After logging in and playing around for a bit, I kept asking myself, “how on earth is this new concept MMORPG’?” I got my answer after I found the game’s build in botting program called “robot”.

Did you just say BUILT IN Bot?
That’s right, I did. If you aren’t familiar with the term ‘bot’ it’s a program or script that plays a game for you in order farm gold or level up your character without you being in front of the computer. Magic World Online’s bot isn’t ‘half-assed’ either, it’s the best dang bot I’ve ever seen. You can program the bot through the game’s interface to literally get you from level 1 to the game’s level cap without you ever having to spend more than a few minutes a day updating your bot’s settings. When I say Magic World Online’s bot is the best bot I’ve ever seen, I can’t even begin to explain how powerful it is. You can setup it up to use potions when your HP or MP gets low, to pick up all or certain loot from monsters or to cast use certain spells and skills while fighting. While I was experimenting with the ‘robot system’ I found that the bot’s most impressive function was the ability to move my character back to town and sell the loot I collected and repurchase HP and MP potions when my inventory was getting full and my potions running low. The sheer amount of flexibility the bot has is incredible; the system even lets lets you enable ‘hit and run’ movement while fighting monsters which helps Mages and Archers, as their primary focus is damage from a distance. If you ever happen to die, the robot system automatically realizes that you’ve been killed and simply runs your character back to your pre-configured grind spot and resumes killing monsters.

If you can’t beat em’ , join em!
I’m not sure what exactly the reasoning was behind implementing a built in botting system in Magic World Online, but one theory I came up with was that they wanted to even the playing field. Since every game has hackers and botters, it would be easier to give everyone the ability to ‘bot’ rather than trying to prevent certain people from doing it. Even established games like Maplestory, Ragnarok Online and Last Chaos failed to completely eliminate hackers and botters after countless updates and player bans. The approach Magic World Online is taking towards botting is certainly unique, as there is no incentive to download a third party tool to level your character for you or even purchase money in the game online because the game already provides you the tools to do both of those things yourself. The good thing about Magic World Online is that even though the combat itself is dull the game offers a massive amount of features.

Job Advancements
One aspect of Magic World Online that I really liked was sheer number of different job advancements. You start off your journey in the game by selecting one of the game’s four starting classes, Mage, Warrior, Archer and Summoner. Only four starting classes may be a turn off, but the fact is that the game has a whopping twelve different job advancements for each of the starting classes, so it adds up to a total of 48 different classes. Players can advance their jobs at level 15, 30, 50 and 65. I’m surprised other free MMORPGs don’t employ similar systems, as I’m tired of playing games that only have three or four starting classes. Although Magic World Online did a phenomenal job of adding variety to the game by creating so many different job advancements, it did a horrible job translating their titles to English.

Fear me, I’m a Dragonbaking Master!
One of Magic World Online’s job advancements for a Mage at level 65 is ‘Dragonbaking master’ and another is ‘Freezing Uranus’. What on earth is a Dragonbaking master? Are they some sort of experts at preparing dragon meat? ‘Freezing Uranus’ is also an inexcusably ridiculous job advancement; It is a bit more intimidating than ‘Dragonbaking master’ but it still doesn’t make much sense. Another one of my favorites is the level 65 job advancement for an Archer, it’s “Sunscreening Master”. Are they supposed to be some sort of experts at applying sun screen? I’m surprised that such horrible translations would get pass quality control, as these translations are simply laughable. I don’t even want to get started with the game’s quest dialogue, as the translations are equally as poor.

Player Housing
Another reason why Magic World Online should be considered a ‘new concept MMORPG’ is that the game has a player housing system. Although Magic World Online wasn’t the first game to pioneer the housing system, the fact is that is that not a lot of MMORPGs have one, and it’s a welcomed change to see one in Magic World Online. Players can design their homes themselves, decorate it with furniture and even hire housekeepers and maids to maintain it for you. The system isn’t exactly perfect, as houses really don’t serve much of a purpose, but the fact that it has a housing system is definitely a plus.

Final Verdict: Good
Even though Magic World Online’s graphics are dated, the game more than makes up with its incredible amount of unique features. The game is by no means perfect but it’s definitely fair to label it as a ‘new concept MMORPG.’
