HolyBeast Online Review

By Omer Altay

When I first saw screenshots of the new MMORPG HolyBeast Online, I immediately had my doubts. The game looked a lot like… well you know, every other free MMORPG with cartoony graphics, but to my surprise it had some originality to it. For those that haven’t heard much about the game, it’s a 3D Fantasy MMORPG that looks a lot like Fly For Fun and Dream of Mirror Online. The most ‘original’ feature in HolyBeast Online is the ability for players to transform between animal and human form at will, which basically adds an entirely new level of gameplay to the title.

Before I get into the meat of the HolyBeast Online review though, players should note that the only way to log into the game is through the HolyBeast Online official website over at HolyBeast.com. Simply double clicking the game’s executable file will not work. Unfortunately though, the game didn’t exactly explain this anywhere, so it took me a good 15-20 minutes before I figured out how to actually log in.

Off to a Good Start

Unlike many MMORPGs, I was quickly impressed by HolyBeast Online’s character creation and customization options. Players start by first customizing their character’s appearance and then selecting their race. There are currently six playable races in the game and they are Taurus, Bird, Dragon, Tiger, Monkey and Dog. Each race has its own strengths and weaknesses and certain classes can only be played by some races. A player’s race also determines what ‘beast’ they start off as and what beast they can transform into in the future. On top of having six races, HolyBeast Online has six unique classes from the traditional melee warrior to the more unique Illusionist class.  Without a doubt, HolyBeast Online has significantly more variety in terms of playable races and classes than most MMORPGs.

A Slow Beginning

Without a doubt, my biggest complaint with HolyBeast Online is the game’s incredibly slow start. Players begin their adventure as a classless ‘young beast’ with zero abilities and must slowly grind their way up to level three before being able to ‘transform’ into human form.  Even after getting to level three, players still don’t gain any useful skills until they grind their way up to level 5 after they select their class. Grinding your way up to level five may sound easy, but the fact is, it’s incredibly boring because HolyBeast Online has very few quests, so much of the gameplay is grind oriented. Luckily though, the ‘advancement’ quests at level three and five are incredibly simple and usually involve killing a handful of random monsters outside of the town. Much of my first few hours in HolyBeast Online were spent mindlessly grinding away at endless hordes of cute monsters.  The concept of grinding isn’t foreign to me, as I’ve played countless MMORPGs, but I would have loved it if the game offered more quests.

For those looking to play HolyBeast Online, the best starting advice I can give them is to purchase a weapon from either an NPC or another play as soon as possible, because equipping even the worst weapon in the game will be an enormous upgrade from your character’s fists, as players don’t start off with any equipment and don’t receive any as quest rewards until after they select their class at level five.

A Novel Concept

Without a doubt the most unique aspect of HolyBeast Online is the ability to transform between human and animal form at will. Excluding this one feature, HolyBeast Online plays a lot like every other generic MMORPG. As players gain experience, their ‘beast form’ continually improves as well and ultimately ends up transforming into a more powerful beast every so often. Every one of these new ‘transformations’ are basically ‘evolutions’ which result in a new appearance and increased stats for the Holy Beast.  If you’re a bit confused at this point, try to imagine beast’s in the game as Pokémon, and as the player gains experience, their Pokémon evolve into bigger and better Pokemon.  I would have loved to see the game developers expand on this feature  a bit more though, as it’s really the only aspect of HolyBeast Online that distinguishes it from other MMORPGs. As it stands, transforming between Human and Beast form really doesn’t make a huge impact on gameplay until much later in the game after players unlock all three evolutions of their beast.

Fluid Gameplay

One of the most important aspects of a game in my opinion is its fluidity. World of Warcraft for example as popular as it is today largely because it’s has extremely fluid gameplay. Everything from combat to walking around in HolyBeast Online feels smooth, which results in more enjoyable gameplay.  One aspect of HolyBeast Online that I would like to see improved the game’s interface. Quest NPCs for example should be marked on the game’s map and quest locations should also be marked on the map. Many newer MMORPGs have both of these features, so I’m surprised HolyBeast Online doesn’t have these simple features. For the most part though, the gameplay is quite responsive and fluid.

Final Verdict  – Good

For those looking for a new MMORPG to sink their teeth into, Holy Beast Online is well worth checking out. Though the game doesn’t exactly revolutionize the MMORPG genre, it has an exceptional amount of variety and a unique beast transformation system that should keep players occupied. My only real complaint with the game is its slow start and limited number of quests, but those issues will likely be patched in the future.
