Kart N Crazy Review

I’ve always been a huge fan of the Mario Kart games, so it’s only natural for me to review all of the Kart Racing MMOs out there. I’ve already reviewed just about every MMO kart racing game out there and so far Kart n Crazy is my favorite, as its gameplay just feels more fun. It seems like ever since Nexon launched the open beta for their kart racing game, Kart Rider, back in early 2008 publishers are now racing to release their own kart based games. Alaplaya has Come on Baby, Gamers First has GoGo Racer and now GOA has Kart n Crazy. So is Kart n Crazy worth playing? Read on to find out!

First Impressions

My single biggest complaint with every kart racing game I’ve played so far was that they were all far too similar to each other and unfortunately Kart N Crazy is no exception; the core gameplay of every kart racing game is virtually identical. Luckily though, where Kart n Crazy shines is its polished gameplay and variety. Heck, the game has 36 different courses and they’re all gorgeously designed and fun, so it’s hard to get bored of Kart n Crazy. I just wish the game had a few more game modes, as currently it only has two, Item mode and Speed mode. The only difference between the two is that Item mode has items enabled while Speed mode does not.

Another reason why Kart n Crazy is one of the best games in its genre is that the gameplay outright fun. From the moment I logged in to the time I put the game down I was having fun. The game supports up to 16 players at once in a single race, how many other racing MMOs support that many players? Perhaps one or two at most, but my point is that unlike its competitors Kart n Crazy just feels incredibly polished. The gameplay mechanics are similar to all of the other kart racing MMOs out there; whichever player finishes the race first wins while dodging obstacles and lobbing items at opponents to slow them down. Races feel incredibly fast and chaotic as every single one of the game’s maps are filled with obstacles and sharp turns. The only real complaint I have with the gameplay mechanics are the slightly unresponsive / delayed controls. Simply turning in any direction feels a bit delayed, which can be quite frustrating at times. Luckily, after a few races players should be able to adjust to the game’s awkward delays, so it’s not that big of a deal.

Ghost Racing / Quest Mode? What the heck?

One interesting feature in Kart n Crazy is the game’s ‘Ghost racing Mode’ which allows players to race by themselves in any of the game’s many stages to try and set their own time records. This wouldn’t normally be an interesting feature, but what makes it fun is the fact that the game actually lists the top three records and which players currently hold the records for each of the game’s many maps. Aside from trying to beat other player’s records, the Ghost racing mode is a great place for newbies to practice and get a feel for each map, as playing a map for the first time tends to be a bit tricky.

Another unique feature in Kart n Crazy is its ‘quest mode’ where players can complete single player challenges. Unfortunately, this feature is currently heavily underdeveloped, as the game only has two quests. Each quest rewards players with a fair amount of experience and nitro, the game’s currency. I’d definitely like to see the game’s developers to expand on this feature as it’s a fun distraction from the game’s main multiplayer component, but as it stands this feature feels incomplete.

Items Galore

Another reason why Kart n Crazy is one of the better kart racing MMOs out there is because it has a great item shop. I’m tired of getting excited over good racing MMOs like Project Powder and Project Torque only to realize that their item shops have only a handful of items. One of the most important features of an MMO in my opinion is a good item shop with lots of items to buy. I’m referring to items that can be bought the game’s currency, not cash shop items; but it’s always nice to see a game with plenty of cash shop items as well. Players in Kart n Crazy can choose from an incredibly large selection of new karts, clothes, accessories and even new character models in the game’s store.

Few glitches and last minute thoughts

Every game has its occasional glitches, but when a glitch ruins the race for you it can get a bit frustrating. After using a speed boost item and hitting a fence by accident, my character got stuck inside of the fence. I immediately tried backing up to try and escape my predicament, but to no avail. I was stuck inside of that fence for good and had to wait until other players finished the race so the match would end. Luckily, this only happened to me once, so it’s not a big deal.

One last thing that’d I’d like to say about Kart n Crazy is that it’s not a game that most people can play for a very long time. Although it has a lot of maps, it’s just not varied enough to keep players hooked on the game, but it’s still a genuinely good racing game.

Final Verdict – Good

Kart n Crazy is certainly one of the best Kart Racing MMOs currently available, but not without its faults. The game’s delayed controls and few game modes may be a turn off for some players, but if you’re looking for a racing MMO to kill some time with, Kart n Crazy is certainly worth the download.
